Car Dent Repair in Greenford

Dent in your car’s bodywork? MH Auto Repair Centre repairs dents at our Perivale/Greenford workshop, from small dings and door edges to larger panel damage. We work on doors, wings, bonnets, boot lids and bumpers, using paintless dent repair where the paint allows it and traditional filler-and-paint repair where it doesn’t. Send us a few photos on WhatsApp and we’ll advise on the best approach before you book anything in.

What is car dent repair?

Car dent repair is the process of removing an inward dent or ding from a body panel and restoring the panel’s original shape and finish. Depending on the dent, this is done in one of two ways: paintless dent repair, which reshapes the metal from behind without disturbing the existing paint, or traditional dent repair, which uses filler, sanding and repainting to restore the panel when the paint has been damaged or the dent is more severe. Both approaches aim to return the panel to its original profile so the damage is no longer visible.

Types of dent damage we repair

Dents vary a lot in size, shape and cause, and that affects how they’re fixed:

  • Door dings — small, shallow dents typically caused by a neighbouring car door in a car park
  • Shopping trolley and knock damage — minor dents from low-speed impacts
  • Creased dents — dents with a sharp fold or crease line, which are harder to reshape than a smooth, rounded dent
  • Larger panel dents — from a more significant knock or minor collision
  • Dents on doors, wings, bonnets, boot lids and bumpers — the most common panels affected
  • Dents near the panel edge — these are generally more difficult to repair without paint work, since there’s less metal to work with from behind

If the paint has cracked, chipped or scratched as part of the damage, that may need addressing alongside the dent itself — see our Car Paint Repair page for that side of things.

What causes car dents?

Most of the dents we see come from everyday driving and parking rather than a serious accident: a car door opened too close in a car park, a shopping trolley rolling into a panel, a low-speed knock while manoeuvring, or something falling onto the car while parked. These tend to produce the kind of shallow, smooth dent that paintless dent repair handles well. Dents from a heavier impact — reversing into a bollard, a more significant knock, or a minor collision — are more likely to involve a crease, stretched metal or damaged paint, which usually points towards a fuller repair.

Paintless dent repair (PDR): how it works and when it’s suitable

Paintless dent repair works by accessing the back of the panel — through the door cavity, wheel arch, or boot area, depending on where the dent is — and carefully massaging the metal back into shape using specialist rods and tools, without cutting, filling or repainting the panel. Because the original factory paint stays untouched, PDR avoids the risk of a colour mismatch and is usually quicker than a full repair.

PDR is generally suitable when:

  • The paint surface is intact, with no cracking, chipping or scratching over the dent
  • The dent is smooth and rounded rather than creased or sharply folded
  • There’s reasonable access to the back of the panel
  • The metal hasn’t been stretched beyond its original shape

PDR tends to be less suitable for dents right at a panel’s edge, dents with a sharp crease, or panels that have already been repaired with filler in the past. Whether your dent is a good candidate depends on its size, depth and location, which we can confirm once we’ve seen it — a few clear photos on WhatsApp is usually enough for an initial view.

When PDR isn’t suitable: traditional dent repair

Where the paint has cracked or chipped, the metal is creased, or the dent is at a panel edge, a traditional repair is usually the better option. This involves gently reshaping the panel, applying filler where needed to restore a smooth profile, sanding it back, and then priming and painting to match the surrounding finish. It takes longer than PDR and involves paintwork, but it’s the more reliable route for dents that paintless repair can’t fully correct. See our Car Paint Repair and Car Respraying pages for more on the paint side of this work.

Small dents vs larger panel damage

A single small dent from a car park knock is usually a straightforward, self-contained repair. Larger dents, dents that span more than one panel, or damage that’s come from a collision rather than a minor knock, are often part of a wider repair. If your damage goes beyond a single dent — for example a bent panel, cracked bumper, or damage across several areas — our Car Accident Repair and Panel Repair pages cover that broader work.

How we handle dent repair

  1. Inspection — we check the dent’s size, depth, location and whether the paint is affected, either from your photos or in person.
  2. Assessment — we confirm whether paintless dent repair is suitable, or whether a fuller repair involving filler and paintwork is needed.
  3. Repair — carried out at our Perivale/Greenford workshop, using the appropriate method for the damage.
  4. Quality check — the panel is checked over to confirm the shape and finish match the surrounding bodywork.
  5. Handback — completed work carries our 6-month warranty.

Is it worth repairing a dent, or can it be left?

A dent doesn’t usually need fixing for safety reasons unless it’s created a sharp or protruding edge, but leaving one can still be worth avoiding. A visible dent affects a car’s appearance and can reduce its resale or part-exchange value, and if the paint has cracked over the dent, leaving it exposed can allow moisture in and lead to corrosion over time. For a straightforward door ding, PDR is often quick and cost-effective enough that repairing it sooner rather than later makes sense.

What affects the cost of dent repair

There’s no fixed price for dent repair, since it depends on the specifics of the damage. Cost depends on things like:

  • The size and depth of the dent
  • Whether paintless dent repair is possible, or a fuller repair including filler and paintwork is needed
  • How many dents or panels are affected
  • Where the dent is and how accessible the back of the panel is
  • Whether colour matching is needed for the surrounding paintwork

FAQs

Can a dent be fixed without repainting?

Often, yes, using paintless dent repair, where the panel is reshaped from behind without disturbing the paint. This depends on the dent’s size, depth, and location — we’ll confirm suitability once we’ve seen it.

Does dent size affect whether it can be repaired without paint?

Yes — smaller, shallower dents are generally better suited to paintless dent repair. Larger or more complex dents, or ones where the paint has cracked, may need a fuller repair.

How long does paintless dent repair take?

It depends on the size and location of the dent. A small, straightforward dent is usually quicker to repair than one that’s larger, creased, or in a harder-to-reach spot — we’ll give you a realistic idea once we’ve assessed it.

Will insurance cover the cost of dent repair?

That depends on your policy and the excess involved, which is worth checking with your insurer directly. If your dent is part of a wider insurance claim, our Insurance Repairs page covers how we can help.
