What is car scratch repair?
Car scratch repair is the process of restoring paintwork that’s been marked, scored or gouged, back to a smooth, even finish. The right method depends entirely on how deep the scratch runs. A light scratch sitting only in the clear coat can often be polished or compounded out without any paint being applied. A scratch that’s gone through the clear coat into the colour coat, or all the way down to primer or bare metal, needs filler, priming, colour matching and clear coat to properly restore the panel. The aim in both cases is the same: a repair that blends into the surrounding paintwork so the damage is no longer visible.
Types of scratch damage we repair
Not all scratches are the same, and identifying the depth is the first step in working out how to fix one:
- Light surface scratches — marks in the clear coat that haven’t gone through to the colour paint underneath. You can usually feel these are shallow because a fingernail won’t catch on the edge.
- Scratches through the paint — where the mark has gone through the clear coat and colour coat, exposing the primer or bare metal beneath.
- Key scratches — a common cause of deeper, more deliberate scratch damage, often running the length of a panel.
- Scuffs and scrapes — wider, shallower areas of damage rather than a single fine line, typically from brushing against a wall, hedge or another vehicle.
- Multiple scratches on one panel — clusters of marks, for example from a car wash brush or repeated contact with foliage.

What causes car scratches?
Most scratches happen during everyday use rather than in a collision: a car park bollard or trolley brushing a panel, a wing mirror clipping a hedge or wall on a narrow road, a zip or belt buckle catching the door as someone gets in, or a badly positioned car wash brush. Key scratches — where paintwork is deliberately scored with a key or similar object — tend to be deeper and more deliberate, often running in a straight line across one or more panels. Weather and age play a part too: paintwork that’s already thin or has lost some of its clear coat is more easily marked by everyday contact than paint in good condition.
Light scratches: polishing and compounding
Can a scratch be repaired without a full respray? Often, yes — light surface scratches confined to the clear coat can usually be polished or machine-compounded out, gradually levelling the surrounding clear coat until the scratch is no longer visible, without needing any new paint applied. This works because the clear coat has enough thickness to be gently cut back. It won’t work on a scratch that’s already gone through to the colour coat, since there’s no amount of polishing that will restore paint that’s genuinely missing.
Deeper scratches: filler, priming and paint matching
Where a scratch has broken through the clear coat and colour coat, polishing alone won’t fix it, because there’s a genuine gap in the paint rather than just a surface mark. This kind of scratch needs filler or primer to build the surface back up, careful colour matching to the surrounding paintwork, and a fresh clear coat to blend the repair in. If the scratch has gone right through to bare metal, the exposed metal also needs treating properly before repainting, since leaving it can allow moisture in and lead to corrosion under the paint over time.
Key scratches
Can key scratches be repaired? Yes, key scratches are a common form of scratch damage we see, though the approach depends on the depth and extent of the mark, the same as any other scratch. A shallow key mark that hasn’t broken through the clear coat can sometimes be polished out. A deeper key scratch that’s gone through to the colour coat or bare metal will need the fuller filler-and-paint approach, and if it runs across more than one panel, the repair needs to account for colour matching across each affected area.
Scratch, dent, or wider paint damage?
Scratch damage is sometimes accompanied by other damage, and it’s worth knowing where each fits. Is it worth repairing a scratch, or can it be left?

Visible scratches affect a car’s appearance and can reduce its resale or part-exchange value, and once a scratch has broken through the paint to bare metal, leaving it exposed lets in moisture and can lead to corrosion spreading under the surrounding paint. A scratch that’s still just in the clear coat is often quick and affordable enough to polish out that there’s little reason to put it off, whereas a deeper scratch is worth having looked at before it has the chance to get worse.
